1. Do I have to wait a month or so if I wanted to paint or spray the yellow pine or pressure treated furniture with a wood finish or protector?
Answer: No. Our furniture is made from lumber that has been KILN dried. It will not resemble the heavy, wet lumber you get from your retail lumber store. Furniture that you want to paint, you'll want to protect it by painting ASAP and storing it in a dry protected place until painted or sealed. This will help minimize "checking" (see below). A large percentage of our customers do however, prefer to just leave it natural.
2. What is checking?
Answer: "Checking" is a term used to describe the natural cracking that may appear in outdoor pressure treated pine. It is expected but will not adversely effect the structural integrity of your furniture. We minimize the extent of it by only using KILN dried lumber.
3. Do you sell painted furniture?
Answer: Yes, we have many different stock color finishes plus the pressure treated natural and yellow pine “unfinished”. You can also order custom colors for a small additional charge. Just send us a 2"x2" color sample or give us the manufacture name and color name & number and we can match it. Please call us for more details.
4. What kind of paint do you use to paint your furniture?
Answer: Adirondack Furniture Online.com painted furniture is handled in an entirely different way than most would think. Before assembly, each furniture part which has been fully dried is individually sanded before assembly. After assembly, the nail holes are filled and the furniture is spray coated with industrial exterior primer. It is then re-sanded by hand and spray coated with two (2) coats of industrial exterior latex paint and then sprayed again with an industrial clear coat for even more protection.
5. We are going to leave the chairs natural. What do we need to do to maintain them?
Answer: For Pressure treated Natural - A good cleaning and coating with a wood protector about every 2 years will slow down the graying process and make rainwater tend to bead off. Then again there's my maintenance routine: NONE! Many people prefer the gray look with aged "checking". Either way your furniture will remain structurally sound for many years to come.
For Yellow Pine “Unfinished” - It is recommended this series NOT be subjected to continous outdoor weather. This series is more suited for covered areas not be directly exposed to the elements. You may also choose to finish with any paint or stain to your own choosing.
6. How difficult is assembly?
Answer: We ship all Yellow pine or pressure treated natural chairs/rockers and swings already partially assembled with very easy to follow instructions to re-assemble ( usually about 15-20 minutes. (Tete-a-Tetes ship fully assembled) We can also ship fully assembled, at your option by motor freight. NOTE: Except side tables/footrest all of our painted furniture is shipped fully assembled.
7. What kind of wood do you use?
Answer: All of our furniture is made of kiln dried #1 and C grade premium furniture standard southern yellow pine. The pressure treated series is as well completely kiln dried before use.
8. Is pressure treated lumber toxic?
Answer: If you eat it or burn and inhale it, then it is indeed dangerous. The use of it for furniture, decks and other outdoor structures is perfectly safe. It's safety, strength and durability is why it is so popular and widely used. We use the “environmentally friendly” ACQ pressure treatment method completely approved by the EPA and many National Environmental Organizations.
9. Just how thick is the wood you use?
Answer: All of our furniture is made from 3/4" stock except for the arms, back legs, and the back support which is from 1"
stock.
